In the 1950s, American college students discovered that the diamond slot atop their shoe was the exact size to hold a coin.
Students tucked a penny into each shoe's slot to ensure they always had emergency change to call home from a payphone. The price of the call has long since changed — but the trend stuck, giving birth to the globally iconic Penny Loafer.
